So driving to work today, get aaaaaaaaaalmost there and car runs like crap. Like running on 2 cyls crap. Engine shakes like a mofo, loud banging (which I now think is from the DP hitting the body it was shaking that bad).

Morning break, fire it up, pull injecor connector 1, no change, 2, no change, 4, it dies, 3 is a PITA to get to so I usually assume it's working. Since 1 and 2 weren't, but it could still run, I figured it was a good guess.

After work compression test:
1=0
2=0
3=70
4=75

Doesn't burn oil or water, so I'm hoping I can limp it home tonight without hydrolocking a cylinder.

Just what I needed in the middle of a turbo upgrade - a head gasket job! At least I hope it's just a HG and not anything worse...

I do hear a PFFFFT on compression stroke when all the plugs are pulled and the comp tester is inserted into 1 or 2, so I'm hoping it's just the thin section between 1/2.

HOORAY! HG JOB! Houston, we have a compression problem. Icon_cheers

Ew Neutral

But look at the positive side, you now have a chance to check the head for cracks, and give it a quick valve grind.

If you are going to limp it home, pull injector connectors and remove plug wires on 1 and 2 (entire wire).

Might as well, might as well...

If it was that shot it wouldn't have lasted long after the upgrade anyhow.

Perfect chance for an extended stage zeero, do the oil seals and stuff too, be done with it and worry-free.

cheers

The upgrade/project car is the '91 740 - that one is still sitting in the driveway awaiting a turbo.

The HG was on the '87 760, which limped home last night no major problems. Diconnected the injectors so no gas spryaing everywhere.

I was tempted to pull the spark plugs on 1 and 2 so the engine wouldn’t have to fight the compression, but since there is no compression, I didn’t bother. I left the spark plug wires in place – I didn’t want to risk having anything arcing out where it shouldn’t be.

What a friggin engine though – runs on 2 and still gets you home.

It ate a head gasket without warning but without blowing oil or coolant all over the place, so I guess that’s good. What I was most worried about was another section of the gasket breaking off and getting water in the cylinders – thankfully that didn’t happen.

Not sure how much work I really want to put into it since I’m selling it, but I hate doing sloppy work so I will likely end up using every gasket or seal in the IPD set, which I need to order.

Cameron? Paging Cameron... nevermind I’ll call you.

Head is off - confirmed break in HG between 1 and 2. Pictures later - starting cleanup / prep stage for re-assembly.

Wow did it really take me more than a month to fix this?! Rebuilt the head, sanded valves, new shims, new intake valve seals, 2 stage grind/lap, new hushers.

Just finished setting the ignition timing, slightly advanced, to 13.5-14 degrees, seems to like a couple degrees of advance with premium fuel.

Trans line was leaking fluid only when under pressure - fixed that too. Replaced the two spares with real tires/rims, 195 65 r15 on the back and 195 60 r15 on the front. Sounds funk-ay, looks pretty damn sweet!

So - back to 2/3 cars running. Water pump (tomorrow?) will make it 3/3.

Keep you eyes peeled - CL ads to be posted soon. May be your last chances before they go to (gasp!) a non-turbobricker.
